EVENT DESCRIPTION // Saturday 24 July, 9am ET / 3pm CET

Enjoy our fifth @home | @dom: virtual artist talk series online public session: ARTISTIC HYBRIDITY: redefining digital and physical creative spaces with Katie Zazenski + Radim Koros.

The Solidarity Project is in conversation with American-born, Warsaw based artist Katie Zazenski + Czech-born, Krakow based artist Radim Koros, moderated by artistic director Joanna Pottle.

These artists will discuss their multi-media and digitally integrated studio practices and how they address and question the relationship of the virtual with the physical. There is much we can learn from them as they challenge us to contemplate future possibilities with various means of connection and communication through artistic practice. The renegotiation of tangible closeness and virtual interconnectedness that we have all experienced in the last year is reflected within these artists' work. Join us as we delve into considering how art questions our collective and individual sense of time, connectivity, imagination, space, and reality with Q&A and discussion.

Artist Biographies

Katie Zazenski is an American-born, Warsaw-based artist, curator, writer, and lecturer whose practice is centered around interconnectedness and communication. Often working collaboratively, her work has been included in exhibitions at public and private institutions including the San Diego Art Institute (CA, USA), the Mercedes Benz Americas Headquarters (MI, USA) and the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius (LT).

Zazenski lectures regularly in sculpture and drawing at private institutions in the US and Poland, including Dartmouth College (NH, USA) and the School of Form (PL). Zazenski has been co-director of the independent, Warsaw-based art space Stroboskop since 2018 (@stroboskop_art_space).

Zazenski joined the editorial team at BLOK Magazine (PL) in 2020, where she focuses on the community of non-institutional, artist-run/off/project spaces in Eastern and Central Europe. Her current project, Shelley Odradek, is a collaboration with O. Andrzejewska, developed during the residency "Re–Directing: East x Empathic Pedagogies: Future Intimacies" at the Center for Contemporary Art, Ujzadowski Castle in Warsaw. Zazenski received her MFA in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and is a two-time Fulbright Fellow to Poland.

Radim Koros was born in Czech Republic. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, where he was studying in the studio of prof. Lech Polcyn. He is currently a PhD student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kracow in the studio of prof. Andrzej Bednarczyk. He also cooperates with UFO Art Gallery in Cracow. In his artistic practice he considers both particularly the painting intuition and the possible harmony of our coexistence with algorithms.

“The painting," he says, "reminds me of the mystery concealed by this notion. I think of its inherent freedom, which induces the fundamental question. What is all about? Especially In today's post-media position, such a question becomes even more crucial. In accordance with nature I think there is something sparkling in our efforts to understand painting and its process. The essence in my case is apparent during finishing a painting, which is the countervailing process of before involved phenomenons.

The Phenomena set takes into account their unknown number. There are many of them that contribute to one image, and some remain inseparable for all, but I would choose only three that remain key to me. It is the history of mankind, a direct transition of information in real-time and the unknown. Therefore, painting becomes a fusion of the past — present — future."

What is the Solidarity Project / Projekt Solidarność?

The Solidarity Project / Projekt Solidarność is a virtual artist + cross-cultural exchange project that brings together emerging Polish and American artists to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis from 2020-2021 to investigate the critical need for togetherness and unity in an age when physical proximity is eliminated, isolation is mandatory, and life as we know it is drastically changing at a rapid, alarming rate. Emerging artists are invited to participate and established artists are invited to engage as guest artists and speakers to use the universal communication form of art to bring people together. Artists are also called upon to critically question and rethink what we do, the purpose of our work, the significance of artistic creation in a time of crisis, and how art can be used as a means of creating local and global solidarity in this moment of crisis as an artistic archival process. The project includes monthly virtual sessions with discussions, cross-cultural exchange, guest speakers, artist talks, and more. Concluding programming, specifically a virtual exhibition and remote opening, will take place in October 2021. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks and months and let us know if you would like to cooperate with us!
